I am challenging myself to give up alcohol for 100 days. For those of you who know me, this will be a challenge as I am your typical "piss head."
After a particularly emotionally challenging year, I have decided to "give back" and sign up for the 100 Day Dry Spell for MATES.
I suppose a little synopsis of the recent life that has been Evie Greenwood is in order. For as long as I can remember, I have had insomnia. Over the last year and a half, this has worsened to the point where I'm lucky to get 2-4 hours of sleep a night. For a golden retriever-type of girly like myself (also known as ADHD), the sleep deprivation has seriously affected my everyday life. I can't fully explain how exhausted, demotivated, and lost I've felt over the last year and a half, but I can confidently tell you that I have exhausted every option and treatment to improve my sleep quality.
About a year ago, my brother unexpectedly passed away. He struggled with substance abuse for most of his life and, unfortunately, lost the battle. It's fair to say my life was turned upside down. I've done a lot of work to get where I am now, and I can genuinely say that I am proud of myself. However, the start of my journey wasn't easy. I tried several services that didn’t really help. MATES was my lighthouse. My general manager put me in touch with them, and I didn't anticipate how amazing their assistance would be. Looking back, I realise how truly overwhelmed I was, and I can't ever thank MATES enough for the torch they gave me during my dark journey.
A couple of years before this, I experienced a very traumatic workplace incident. After the collapse of a steel canopy, I started experiencing panic attacks and was later diagnosed with acute PTSD.
In true "Evie" style, I have been extremely resilient on my journey. I'm so thankful for my determination (some would say stubbornness), but I want to raise awareness for those who have a different journey. By sharing my story and participating in the 100 Day Dry Spell for MATES, I hope to shed light on the importance of mental health support and the incredible work that MATES does.
Thank you for visiting our Fundraising Page for Dry Spell for MATES.
Research shows that the Australian Construction industry loses a worker every second day to suicide. MATES WA provides suicide prevention through community development programs on sites.
Every dollar donated counts towards helping MATES save lives in the construction industry.

Well done Evie! Proud of you.
